Every year around August, Good Samaritan holds a Sign Langauge seminar to help parents and community members learn their children’s language. Parents at least learn how to greet their children, assign chores, ask about their child’s day, say ‘I love you’, and much more that is vital to family life. This seminar proves to parents once again that ‘Kasiru’ is the wrong way to describe their children.
The seminar costs approximately 3,000,000 Uganda shillings or about $834 USD. Most of those costs go towards paying for food, but reimbursing parents from distant villages for their transport and paying teachers for the event also contribute to the cost. The remaining cost goes to print Ugandan Sign Language guides for parents to bring home with them which would increase the sustainability of their sign skills.
